Let’s Unbox: The Last of Us Part II – Special Edition

Desperate fans had to endure an actual, global virus to finally get their hands on The Last of Us Part II. After numerous delays, June 19th saw Naughty Dog finally unveiling the hotly-anticipated conclusion to the beloved PS4 franchise. Let’s dive deep into what the Special Edition nets you.

There are very few games which can make you as fidgety as the nasty clickers. The Last of Us Part II had it all. A genre-defying, platform-defining sensational first installment? Check! A proven studio dedicated to narrative storytelling? Check! Steadily built-up hype exploding with a last-minute leak? Absolutely! So it was a no-brainer that TLOU 2 was going to be a massive event for the PS4 and for almost every gamer.

The world might be stuck indoors but for the crowd gathered at the retail stores, it was nothing short of an E3 unveil. People calling this the game of the generation might not be that far off the mark. But that discussion is for later. For now, let’s see what you get in the Special Edition – priced $20 more than the Standard edition.

The overall package is contained in a premium steelbook case. You can see Ellie on the front and another as-yet unnamed character on the back of the case. The oil-painting-esque artwork again conveys the character focus that Naughty Dog targets in their games.

Who’s the new girl? A nemesis? Current girlfriend? Side chick?

Along with the case you get one very special item – a 48-page mini art book created in collaboration with Dark Horse Books. With a rich collection of glorious original art, from the minds of the game’s very gifted creators, the art book is a treasured addition to any fan’s collection. Each page is a testament to the beautiful yet haunting world of the game and piques your excitement to know how Ellie’s story unfolds, five years after the events of The Last of Us.

You also get the digital version of the art book, along with the digital soundtrack of the game and a PS4 dynamic theme which shuffles between several wallpapers depending on the time of day. Cool, huh? Besides the steelbook case and the art book, you obviously get the game discs, along with the voucher code you can use to download the digital items included in your edition.

Granted, the Special Edition does not have an Ellie statue, her replica backpack or her bracelet but I think it hits the sweet spot between restraint and splurge. Moreover, one needs to save money for Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, Dying Light 2, Marvel’s Avengers (eh, maybe) and more coming this year.
